Dr. Frederick Heiselman, one of the volunteer dentists, treats a patient during last year’s Community Dental Day.

The Dental Hygiene Clinic at UC Blue Ash College is offering free dental care to the public on Friday, March 10 from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

This is the second year that the college has hosted the UC Blue Ash College Community Dental Day. The goal is to provide access to dental care for those who do not have dental insurance or who have never been to a dentist. A report by the Ohio Department of Health shows that 45 percent of adults in Ohio are without dental insurance, while more than half of the children across the state experience tooth decay by the third grade.

Ten local dentists and countless dental professionals, including students and alumni of the dental hygiene program at UC Blue Ash, are generously donating their time to help make the free dental care possible. The Dental Care Plus Group is also serving as the presenting sponsor for this important community event for the second year in a row. Additional support is provided by the Maxwell C. Weaver Foundation – US Bank Trustee, and the Patterson Foundation.

To accommodate as many patients as possible, each person will receive one free service during the event, choosing from fillings, extractions, teeth cleanings, or sealants. Anyone who plans to attend should register in advance at www.ucblueash.edu/dentalday. There are some health care screening questions that patients must complete before they can be treated at the free clinic.

“There is such a need for access to quality dental care, which can be so critical to our overall health,” says Cyndee Stegeman, chair of the Dental Hygiene Department at UC Blue Ash. “We are hosting the community dental day event again this year to help some of the most underserved portions of our population receive the restorative care that they need.”

The UC Blue Ash College Dental Hygiene Clinic offers preventative dental care, including teeth cleanings, at a discounted rate to the community throughout the school year. It’s a great way for students to gain valuable experience treating patients as part of their education. The clinic is limited in the services it can offer, since a licensed dentist is required to provide more advanced care, like the type of services that will be available during the community dental day event.
