Cadaver, by Morgan Craig, is among the pieces on display the new exhibition at the UC Blue Ash College Art Gallery.

UC Blue Ash College Art Gallery is proud to present Impact! The new exhibition features a display of artwork that comments upon cultural, economic and social issues.

The exhibition will be on view in the gallery from October 31 through December 2, 2016. An opening reception will be held on Friday, November 4 from 5:00–8:00 p.m. in the art gallery (located at 4131 Cooper Road in Blue Ash, Ohio). The reception is open to the public and will include free refreshments.

This group exhibition features five artists from across the nation and the world: Morgan Craig (Philadelphia, PA); Christopher McGinnis (Pittsburgh, PA); J. Pouwels (Chico, CA); Reza Rafiei Rad (Teheran, Iran); and Kathryn Shinko (Akron, OH).

The artwork on display consists of oil paintings, ink drawings, mixed media, cast graphite, cardboard constructions, photographs and industrially woven tapestries. Each piece purposefully draws attention to social issues such as exploitation, economic disparity, and gender inequality. Morgan Craig’s paintings focus on industrial architecture as markers for societal value judgments while Chris McGinnis mines the symbolism of coal in the economy and social structures of southern Pennsylvania. J. Pouwels presents drawings and constructions that comment on the crisis of safe drinking water inspired by the catastrophe of Flint, Michigan. Reza Refiei Rad and Kathryn Shinko both explore feminist issues of power and sexual violence in their work, which is separated by both divergent cultural origin and media.

The exhibition “is intended to provoke a pause in our thinking about topics we often find ourselves able to circumvent or ignore,” says UC Blue Ash professor and co-curator the exhibition, H. Michael Sanders.  “The purpose is to stimulate dialogue between the artist and the viewer in the rarefied environment of the art gallery, and conversation with one another when we find ourselves back in our everyday environments,” adds John Wolfer, also a UC Blue Ash professor and co-curator of the exhibition.

Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. A full-color print catalogue of the exhibition is available in the gallery.
